Check Under The Lid
In the old days, you could jiggle the handle of the toilet. From time to time, this helps correct the problem but is still a basic fix for older toilets alone (if you do have an older toilet, try to jiggle the handle to see if it corrects the problem). Your best option is to first remove the lid and check the fill tube. The fill tube runs out of the overflow tube (you’ll know this as it is the open-topped tube). Make sure the fill tube is connected to the overflow tube and fill valve. If it is disconnected, make sure to reconnect it.
Change the Fill Height
If the fill height is off in the toilet, the water will continue to run. Ideally, this needs to be set about an inch under the top of the overflow tube. So check the float that is connected to the fill valve. If it isn’t an inch above the overflow tube, adjust it down or up to give it the necessary height. This should fix the problem if the fill height was off. However, if you find that it continues to revert back to the previous fill height, it probably means your float is broken. Replacing the float will prevent this problem from continually happening. It’s an inexpensive fix and you shouldn’t have any problem picking up a replacement at your local home improvement store.
